Reckon.ai secures €5.1M for AI-powered smart locker expansion

Reckon.ai, a Portuguese artificial intelligence startup, has completed a €5.1 million funding round to expand its checkout-free shopping technology across global markets. The Porto-based company, which transforms conventional product cabinets into autonomous retail units, attracted investment from Iberis Capital, Alea Capital Partners, and Touro Capital Partners.

The SaaS platform enables customers to purchase items without traditional payment processes by using computer vision and AI technology. Shoppers tap their payment card, select products from smart cabinets, and leave without additional checkout steps—a model that addresses retail accessibility while maintaining product interaction opportunities.

    Technology Meets Traditional Shopping Preferences

The investment thesis centers on bridging autonomous commerce with consumer behavior patterns. “When considering a purchase, customers want to hold the products in their hands. Reckon.ai offers this possibility while maintaining autonomous shopping, anytime, anywhere” ~ João Henriques, Partner at Iberis Capital, the round’s lead investor.

Iberis Capital, established in 2017, manages over €600 million in assets across more than 1,250 investors. The firm’s backing signals confidence in Reckon.ai’s approach to retail automation, particularly its focus on maintaining tactile shopping experiences within automated systems.

    Market Expansion and Development Plans

The funding will support several strategic initiatives over the next four years. Reckon.ai plans to accelerate international market penetration, enhance its autonomous cabinet technology, and enter new industry verticals beyond its current focus areas.

Research and innovation capabilities in Portugal will receive significant investment, alongside computing infrastructure improvements and expanded cabinet functionalities. These developments aim to strengthen the company’s technical foundation as it scales operations globally.

With this round, Reckon.ai’s total fundraising reaches €8.5 million since its 2019 founding by Ana Pinto and Paulo Ribeiro. The company has developed patented systems that convert standard dispensing units into intelligent retail terminals.

    Industry Adoption and Vertical Expansion

Major retailers have integrated Reckon.ai’s technology into their operations, including Jerónimo Martins, Carrefour, Sonae, IKEA, Rewe, Lekkerland, and Petit Forestier. This client base demonstrates the platform’s viability across different retail formats and geographic markets.

Originally concentrated on food retail applications, the company now targets pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and electronics sectors. European markets represent primary expansion territories, while the United States presents additional growth opportunities for the autonomous shopping platform.

At Reckon.ai, our mission is to redefine how people interact with retail by making shopping seamless, intuitive, and accessible” ~ Ana Pinto, CEO. The company’s approach emphasizes consumer convenience while providing businesses with scalable retail solutions.

    Autonomous Retail Market Dynamics

The smart cabinet model addresses several retail challenges simultaneously. Businesses gain 24-hour sales capabilities without staffing requirements, while consumers access products outside traditional operating hours. The technology eliminates queue times and reduces operational overhead for retailers.

Reckon.ai’s patented approach differentiates itself through computer vision accuracy and user experience design. The system processes product selection and payment authorization automatically, reducing friction points common in traditional retail transactions.

As retail automation continues developing, companies like Reckon.ai face opportunities to capture market share across multiple industries. The fresh funding provides resources to capitalize on growing demand for contactless shopping solutions and autonomous retail experiences.
