BOB, a blockchain protocol developing infrastructure to connect Bitcoin with decentralized finance applications, has completed multiple funding rounds totaling $21 million since December 2024. The latest $9.5 million strategic round attracted both returning investors and new backers, signaling growing institutional interest in Bitcoin DeFi solutions.
Castle Island Ventures, which led BOB’s original $10 million seed round, participated in the recent strategic funding alongside existing investors Ledger Cathay Capital, RockawayX, Asymmetric, and Hypersphere. New investors joining the round include Amber Group, Sats Ventures, and Nathan McCauley, CEO of Anchorage Digital.
Hybrid Chain Technology Targets Bitcoin Integration
BOB’s approach centers on what it calls a “Hybrid Chain” model, designed to merge Bitcoin’s security infrastructure with Ethereum’s DeFi capabilities. The protocol aims to make Bitcoin assets directly usable in DeFi applications without requiring wrapped token representations.
The company recently launched native Bitcoin DeFi on its testnet with support from Lombard, Amber Group, and RockawayX. This development utilizes BOB’s BitVM bridge technology, which the team says will enable direct Bitcoin deposits and withdrawals without traditional trust assumptions.
“We believe in the enormous potential of Bitcoin DeFi and see BitVM as the best path forward for trustless BTC deposits and withdrawals” said Nic Carter, Founding Partner at Castle Island Ventures.
Technical Developments and Market Opportunity
BOB has implemented several technical innovations, including becoming what it describes as the first hybrid ZK rollup. This technology combines zero-knowledge proofs with optimistic rollup mechanics to reduce costs and improve efficiency for fraud dispute resolution.
The protocol has also integrated with Fireblocks’ institutional wallet infrastructure, potentially expanding access to Bitcoin DeFi for institutional participants. According to the company, this integration combines secure custody solutions with BOB’s network capabilities.
BOB’s leadership positions the protocol to address what they characterize as a $750 billion opportunity in latent Bitcoin capital. The company suggests Bitcoin DeFi represents significant growth potential, though adoption will depend on technical execution and market acceptance.
Strategic Vision and Implementation
Alexei Zamyatin, BOB’s Co-Founder and BitVM Researcher, emphasized the significance of continued investor support.
“The fact that we continue to attract new partners, and so many of our original investors have doubled down, speaks volumes to the work our team has done to define Bitcoin’s central role in DeFi” ~ Alexei Zamyatin, co-founder and CEO of BOB.
The funding will accelerate development of BOB’s hybrid chain infrastructure and support the protocol’s mainnet launch plans. BOB intends to operate Bitcoin-secured bridges to multiple blockchains, creating what it envisions as a gateway for Bitcoin holders to access yield opportunities across different networks.
The multiple funding rounds reflect growing investor confidence in Bitcoin DeFi infrastructure, particularly solutions that maintain Bitcoin’s security properties while enabling sophisticated financial applications. BOB’s approach of combining Bitcoin finality with Ethereum compatibility represents one emerging strategy in this developing market segment.
