Antler launches $65M criticality fund for deep tech ventures

Global venture capital firm Antler has launched Criticality, a $65 million fund targeting transformative technologies at the seed and Series A stages. The new fund represents a strategic expansion beyond Antler’s established pre-seed model, focusing on companies building breakthrough solutions in deep tech and underserved sectors.

The fund operates on the premise that the most durable, category-defining companies will emerge where technical complexity meets real-world challenges. While much of traditional venture capital has gravitated toward software efficiencies and short-term gains, Criticality takes a contrarian approach by backing harder, longer-horizon investments with potential to reshape core systems.

    Investment Philosophy Emphasizes Technical Rigor

Criticality maintains sector flexibility while applying a deep tech lens to each opportunity. The fund targets non-obvious, high-leverage problems from the earliest stages of company formation, seeking founders who work on foundational infrastructure and overlooked systems.

The most valuable companies of the next decade will emerge at the intersection of technical complexity and real-world urgency” said Ryan Sommerville, General Partner at Criticality. The fund aims to identify and support teams building technologies capable of shifting entire industries.

    Public-Private Partnership Structure

The New Mexico State Investment Council anchors the fund, creating what Antler describes as a next-generation approach to public-private alignment. This structure prioritizes strong financial returns while enabling institutional capital to support innovation that strengthens national resilience and regional development.

Though independently managed, Criticality operates with optimization for both return-driven capital deployment and long-term economic impact. The model allows rapid deployment with early-stage founders while bringing in capital partners designed for technical rigor and institutional scale.

    Active Deployment Across Multiple Sectors

The fund has closed and begun active capital deployment. Current portfolio companies span artificial intelligence applications for drug discovery and clinical trials, modular housing solutions, and value-based healthcare platforms.

Criticality complements Antler’s existing U.S. pre-seed platform by extending capital into later-stage opportunities. This creates what the firm calls a capital supply chain, allowing promising founders to continue scaling with consistent support.

    Building on Antler’s Global Platform

Founded in Singapore in 2018 by Magnus Grimeland and a team of entrepreneurs and investors, Antler has become the most active early-stage venture capital firm worldwide according to its own metrics. The firm specializes in “Day Zero” investing, partnering with founders before company launch.

Antler operates across 27 cities in leading technology markets and has made over 1,500 investments into early-stage startups. Pitchbook has repeatedly recognized the firm as the world’s most active angel and seed-stage investor. Notable portfolio companies include Airalo and Lovable.

The launch of Criticality reflects Antler’s conviction-driven approach to early-stage venture investing, extending the firm’s support infrastructure to help founders scale beyond initial formation phases.
